A Raw Food Diet And The Athlete
The Healthy Diet Podcast this week is about exercise, the athlete and a healthy raw food diet.
Show notes:
- Don’t athletes need more energy than a raw diet or vegan lifestyle can provide? Testimonies from or about vegan athletes.
- Is animal protein necessary for strength and endurance? Elephants, Silverback gorillas, cows are all herbivores.
- We can get enough protein from plant sources believe it or not.
- Carl Lewis, Dr. Ruth Hedrich, Pat Reeves and Victoria from Maine are all vegans and well-conditioned athletes. Victoria loves our faux tuna salad.
- Ruth Hedrich’s Web Site, Pat Reeve’s Web Site
- We’ve lost our desire for the usual animal based diet and aren’t even interested in the deli counter at Publix any longer.
- There is ample evidence that food is our medicine and ultimate nourishment

It seems like a lot of work for one to get the essential amino acids that the body cannot generate…..when it is so easy to just eat some meat and you don’t have to worry about it. Also, for many athletes, it would require the consumption of mass quantities of food. One of the nice things about eating meats is their satiety factor….Just some thoughts

Ed,
Spinach is a great source of protein. It gets more than 50% of its calories from protein and the spinach soup recipe on our web site is very satiating. We had some last week and it was great!

Carl Lewis is not a vegan…. I know him personally and ate a chicken dinner with him that he prepared himself less than a few months ago.

in response to Ed’s thoughts:
look at the horrible state of health of the bulk of society in the western world, who eats this way (eating meat is easier??). Is it really? Ask your digestive tract and your colon? Or you can just wait until you get heart disease, stroke, or even cancer. There’s your answer. There’s a price to pay and our society is paying it by eating this way (SAD). If it’s so much work to get all your amino acids, then all these athletes would spend all their time eating and NOT have any time left for practicing and performing the way they do… obviously there’s more to it.
